Brill, a leading international academic publisher in the Humanities, Social Sciences, International Law and Biology, announces today that John Martin has been appointed Chief Executive Officer ad interim effective 1 September 2022, to be followed by his appointment as statutory director later this year. As CEO of Brill, Martin will be responsible for the general management and the future strategic development of Brill.
John Martin (1970) studied Molecular Biology (PhD) at Sheffield University in the UK and moved to The Netherlands in 1995 as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Utrecht. He started his publishing career at Wolters Kluwer Academic Publishers (1996) followed by various roles at Swets (1999), including Managing Director of Swets & Zeitlinger Publishers. After a period as a strategy consultant at ContentConnected (2006) he joined Sanoma Learning as COO in 2009. He was promoted to the Executive Management of Sanoma Group in 2011 as Chief Digital and Strategy Officer and became CEO of Sanoma Learning in 2014. Since 2020 he serves as non-executive director and has been an advisor to and investor in various education and education technology companies. His experience combined with his personal leadership style make him very suitable to head Brill.” Brill’s Works Council has given positive advice on the appointment. The Supervisory Board intends to formally appoint John Martin as statutory director following an EGM, currently expected to be held in autumn this year. Following his appointment, the Management Board of Brill will have three members: John Martin (CEO), Jasmin Lange (CPO) and Wim Dikstaal (CFO).
