Our client a leading STM publisher based in Paris, requires a new Publishing Director to run a portfolio of Journals.
This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on responsibilities as a publisher for selected journals. As a key member of the management team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the editorial strategy, managing a high-performing team, and driving the development and success of our publications
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to defining the company’s editorial strategy, with innovative proposals to expand and enhance the journal portfolio.
- Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders to align editorial, communication, and sales strategies.
- Drive economic efficiency through budget management, growth planning, and cost optimization.
- Lead the sustainable transition of the journal portfolio to open access, aligning with industry trends and organizational goals.
- Foster a collaborative and motivated team environment to achieve portfolio growth and success.
- Promote individual and collective development
- Participate in the Management Committee, providing regular updates and insights to senior leadership.
- Develop and strengthen partnerships with national and international organizations to develop the portfolio of journals and identify opportunities for growth.
- Manage and develop networks and relationships within different research communities.
- In collaboration with the scientific editors of the journals, identify emerging trends and propose editorial strategies to increase the portfolio’s visibility, submissions and reputation.
- Ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the journals, in close collaboration with other departments, including operations, sales and marketing.
- Represent the company at conferences and industry events to promote the portfolio and establish partnerships.
- Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with editors and editorial boards to build and maintain the reputation and quality of the journals.
- Report to, and actively engage in meetings with the journal owners.
Skills & Experience
- Degree in science, ideally PhD level.
- Fluency in English and French.
- Proven leadership and team management experience in academic publishing or a related field.
- Strong organisational skills with a structured, methodical approach.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy, active listening, and the ability to foster team cohesion.
- Confident decision-maker with the ability to delegate effectively, set priorities, and maintain focus on strategic goals.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts, anticipate challenges, and implement solutions proactively. High levels of autonomy, adaptability, and a willingness to embrace personal and professional growth.
- Strategic thinker with a hands-on approach, capable of managing both the big picture and critical details.
- Good understanding of open access and open science policies and models.
